Apple, an American technology giant, is reportedly in discussions with Wipro Enterprises and Lakshmi Machine Works (LMW) for onboarding them as potential suppliers, as the company plans to strengthen its foothold in India. These are the latest names to join the growing list of Indian players that the iPhone major is looking to onboard as suppliers, according to a report. Other Indian companies that have been on boarded or yet to on board include Tata Group, Motherson Group, Aequs and Bharat Forge.

In the past, the tech giant had assembled the vanilla iPhone 15 variant in India. Last year, it doubled the India manufacturing effort and also started the assembly of iPhone 16 Pro models. In 2024, Apple produced iPhones valuing $17.5 billion along with achieving a record $12.8 billion in exports the same year.

As per reports, Apple’s talks with Indian players are a ‘clear sign’ of the tech giant deepening its presence in the country, even when there are uncertainties over the US President Donald Trump’s policies.

The Indian government is now considering introducing an incentive scheme for electronic components manufacturing

Apple currently has three iPhone assembly plants in India. One of them is operated by Foxconn, while the other two plants are operated by the Tata Group. Apple has also encouraged its suppliers from China, Japan, Taiwan and other countries to set up manufacturing units in India. Top suppliers that have started manufacturing in India include Sunwoda (battery packs), Foxlink (cables) and Aequs (enclosures).

Going forward, Apple is likely to deepen its local linkages. By doing so, it can reduce its overall cost of business in India while simultaneously fostering technological and financial growth for local ecosystem players. Adding to this, the Indian government is now considering introducing an incentive scheme for electronic components manufacturing.
