According to reports, Apple Inc. is racing to develop a more conversational version of its Siri digital assistant, aiming to catch up with OpenAI’s ChatGPT and other voice services.

According to insiders who asked not to be named because the endeavor hasn't been made public, the new Siri, whose specifics haven't been disclosed, uses more sophisticated large language models, or LLMs, to enable back-and-forth discussions. Additionally, the system can process increasingly complex requests more quickly.

Apple is working to become a leader in artificial intelligence(AI), and part of that effort is updating the 13-year-old Siri service. Although the business unveiled its much-discussed Apple Intelligence platform last month, it still lacks many of the features that other digital titans have to offer.

Those developing the new voice assistant call it LLM Siri. It will eventually be a part of Apple Intelligence. A key component of generative AI, LLMs consume vast volumes of data to find trends and provide answers.

Although Apple has been testing the updated software as a stand-alone app on iPhones, iPads, and Macs, the technology will eventually replace the current Siri interface. As part of the forthcoming iOS 19 and macOS 16 software updates, which the firm internally refers to as Luck and Cheer, the business plans to reveal the redesign as early as 2025.

To communicate more like a human and perform jobs more like ChatGPT and Google's Gemini, the updated Siri will use new Apple AI models

The new capabilities won't be immediately incorporated into the hardware lineup for the next year, similar to Apple Intelligence this autumn. Rather, Apple intends to make the new Siri available to the public as early as spring 2026, which is roughly a year and a half away. Apple is still a few months away from revealing the plan, so the features and timing may change.

To communicate more like a human and perform jobs more like ChatGPT and Google's Gemini, the updated Siri will use new Apple AI models. Additionally, it will leverage App Intents more extensively, enabling more accurate control over third-party apps. Additionally, the program will have access to Apple Intelligence capabilities like text writing and summarization.
