Bluesky, another rival of X, announced adding blue checks to verified accounts to make sure users are who they say they are.

Bluesky permits people and organizations to use their domain name as their username under the current setup.

The platform will continue to offer this verification feature.

The action is similar to a feature that Twitter previously used to help users identify when account holders were genuine and to prevent impersonation.

According to an update from the social media platform, more than 270,000 accounts have connected their Bluesky identities to their websites since 2023.

A blue checkmark will now appear next to the username of users that Bluesky has verified.

Additionally, the platform will enable certain organizations to directly verify accounts through the Trusted Verifiers function. For instance, a news organization that is known for being a reliable verifier can use the app to directly verify its journalists. Blue Check verified accounts can be tapped to reveal which organizations have verified them. Bluesky will then examine these confirmations to make sure they are genuine.

A white check in a blue circle will indicate verified accounts. A scalloped icon will be used to indicate trusted verification.

However, unlike its larger competitor X, Bluesky is not currently taking direct applications for verification. As this functionality stabilizes, a request form will be made available in the future for prominent and genuine accounts who wish to be verified and become trusted verifiers.

The action is similar to a feature that Twitter previously used to help users identify when account holders were genuine and to prevent impersonation.

In 2019, Jack Dorsey, a co-founder of Twitter, developed Bluesky as a side project. Dorsey gathered five engineers to create a decentralized Twitter substitute. At the time, he stated that he intended to offer users more control over their personal information and content moderation because centralized efforts to police abuse and false information on a site like Twitter were unlikely to succeed.

Bluesky didn't launch until 2023, the year after Musk, a close ally of US President Donald Trump, acquired Twitter. Since then, Musk has used the network to spread false information.

According to the platform, more than 270,000 users currently use the feature that allows people and businesses to use their website addresses as user names to authenticate themselves on the rapidly growing social media network.

According to the team, Bluesky is beginning with blue checks as "trusted verifiers" and intends to eventually introduce a request form for accounts looking for the authenticity seal.
