The government is working to roll out the second phase of the India Semiconductor Mission which will focus on getting all component companies, raw material suppliers, and others to India apart from the semiconductor fabrication and chip packaging units, says Union Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.

“We are formulating the Semicon 2.0, which will be a much-expanded form of the first phase. We will work towards getting the entire ecosystem,” says Ashwini.

The government needs 3-4 months to complete the establishment of ISM 2.0; the Ministry of IT will soon submit to the Cabinet some of the new proposals and a plan to modernize the semiconductor laboratory in Mohali.

Vaishnaw spoke to the media at the Semicon India Industry Conference in Greater Noida. In the new phase of Semicon, the government will also work to increase the availability of raw materials.

“The industry has formed partnerships with academia. The focus is on developing the entire ecosystem, across equipment, specialized materials and specialized gases and chemicals,” says Ashwini.

Programs such as LAM Research’s Semiverse, currently running across 74 universities, have trained over 2,600 students this year alone, with plans to scale massively in the coming years

In addition, the state of Uttar Pradesh will also participate in the new proposal. UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also spoke to the media and said that land and capital subsidies amounting to about 25 percent of the total cost have been made available. In addition, 1,000 acres of land has been set aside for this purpose by the Yamuna authorities.

“Programs such as LAM Research’s Semiverse, currently running across 74 universities, have trained over 2,600 students this year alone, with plans to scale massively in the coming years. Additionally, AMD’s global design center in Bengaluru has opened with 5,000 engineers, with further expansion on the horizon,” says Ashwini.
