According to reports, OpenAI may soon require organizations to complete an identity verification process to access certain upcoming artificial intelligence models.

The procedure, referred to as Verified Organization, is an innovative method for developers to gain access to the most sophisticated models and features on the OpenAI platform, according to the company.

To be eligible, organizations need to provide a government-issued identification from a nation where OpenAI’s API can be accessed. The company mentioned that a single ID can authenticate just one organization every 90 days, and not every applicant will qualify.

The page states that, At OpenAI, we are committed to ensuring that AI is widely available and utilized safely. Sadly, a small percentage of developers deliberately utilize the OpenAI APIs in breach of our usage policies. We’re implementing the verification procedure to reduce the risky use of AI while still providing advanced models to the wider developer community.

The action is probably intended to strengthen security regarding OpenAI's models as they progress in sophistication. The organization has released multiple reports outlining its initiatives to identify and thwart the misuse of its models, including by groups purportedly associated with North Korea.

The company led by Sam Altman recently declared that it will discontinue its GPT-4 model from ChatGPT on 30 April. Nonetheless, GPT-4 will still be accessible to developers through OpenAI’s API

The verification procedure can additionally aid in deterring intellectual property theft. Earlier this year, OpenAI was looking into whether a faction linked to the China-based AI laboratory DeepSeek had retrieved substantial amounts of data through its API in late 2024, potentially to develop its own models — which would breach OpenAI’s usage policy.
