According to reports, the India AI Mission has selected projects from eight educational institutes across the country to enhance ethical AI development in diverse themes such as machine learning, synthetic data generation, AI bias mitigation, ethical AI frameworks, and privacy-enhancing tools.

“As AI continues to permeate different sectors of society, India is committed to investing in agile mechanisms to develop unique governance tools, frameworks, and guidelines that are based on Indian data sets and reflect India's unique challenges, opportunities, and data sets,” according to the ministry of electronics and information technology.

The Rs. 10,372-crore India AI Mission, an initiative of the Ministry of IT, was launched last July to create computing power for up to 10,000 graphics processing units (GPUs) to develop AI applications in critical areas and address issues raised by the central, state and government agencies.

The goal of the project is to address the Indian Institute of Technology, Jodhpur, will lead the project on machine learning lifting in generative basic models, and IIT Roorkee will lead the project on the design and development of synthetic data generation methods to mitigate dataset bias.

Recognizing the need for appropriate guardrails to promote the responsible development, adoption, and diffusion of AI, responsible AI projects were selected to develop Indigenous tools and frameworks and establish guidelines for ethical, transparent, and reliable AI technologies

Besides, the National Institute of Technology, Raipur, will work on the project on the development of responsible AI for bias mitigation in healthcare services.
